Platanos is a small and friendly kafenio and restaurant in the small village of Fourni 12km from Elounda. Over the winter this little gem has become famous with the local people living in Elounda and the surrounding areas, so with my trusty camera me and a few friends decided to check it out. From Elounda you make your way through Pano Elounda and follow the road to Pines, then continue to the small village of Fourni. When you reach the large church turn right into the square it is here you will find Platanos.

The Village
Fourni is a small village with 2 churches and a number of stone wells, the square has a very large and old Plane tree of which the restaurant takes it's name.
The Restaurant (Platanos)
The village square can be reached either by taking the road to the right just as you are entering the village, follow the narrow street until you see the small church turn left and you are in the square with the restaurant to the left. The other way is to follow the main road into the village until you see the large church to your left and turn right down into the square, you will see the restaurant to your right. Please note parking is limited to street parking.

We entered the small restaurant and kostos showed us our seats, he presented us the menu and took our order for drinks. As we looked at the menu and had our drinks a small mezze was presented to us of various Cretan dishes, this was a great pre-taster of what to expect in the standard of the food. After the mezze we made our order of various dishes from the menu, some of which was snails and kous kous, fried white bait, pork chops and a few other wonderful dishes. The standard of food was excellent as was the service, the pork chop melted in the mouth, the flavours and the presentation of the food was excellent. Fresh fruit was served after our meal, which was a wonderful compliment to the finish of our eating experience at the Platanos restaurant.
After hearing good things about this restaurant I felt I should check it out for myself and the EloundaInfo site. I am glad I did, this restaurant is a gem and well worth a visit and well worth the small drive. The food and service is excellent, with true traditional Cretan food and a great atmosphere I highly recommend you visit this little restaurant. If you can't drive then get a lift if you can't get a lift then get a taxi. You won't be disappointed. Seating indoors and plenty outdoors under the shade of the Plane tree.
