Circular Walks and Gorges in East Crete
By Anne Bouras and Caris Gallos

The Book And The Author(s)

We have lived in Aghios Nikolaos for over 30 years and we both have tourist apartments. Our clients would often ask if we know any short walks and we gave them a few routes which proved very popular.
So this book came about due to our interest in walking and the surrounding countryside and finding that other people shared our interest. There was very little information on walks, and maps were not very helpful. We jotted down notes to remind us when we went back and gradually this extended into full descriptions and sketch maps.
We first published the book in 2003 and now we have a 2nd edition which has all the updates (bulldozers and fences being the main culprits for the changes) plus 2 new walks. It is also now available in Greek. The book will be on sale in Aghios Nikolaos and Elounda in bookstores and the tourist information offices. Anyone wanting information can contact Anne:

2nd Edition Of Circular Walks And Gorges In East Crete
The book launch on the 30th March 2009 at 1900hrs in the Chamber of Commerce (by the harbour - up steps beside Puerto Bar) had slides and commentary about 2 walks and one gorge in the book plus a discussion of the problems of walking in the area. It was spoken in Greek and English.
The evening was well attended – over 100 people – luckily most people found a seat. After speeches from the deputy chief of County Council Maria Pratsinakis (lady in white) Michalis Klontzas, Member of the Town Council, and the President of the Cultural Organization Manolis Thrapsianotis – the organization had paid for the publication of the book. Caris Gallos spoke in English. Leonidas Klontzas who also gave a speech about the two writers, then translated everything into Greek and Anne Bouras worked the power point programme.
We described 2 of our walks and the Kritsa Gorge in detail illustrating with slides and video and then went on to describe the various problems affecting walkers ie bulldozers, fencing, overgrown paths, bee hives etc. We also had photos of different wells, types of ruins, paths, signposting and cairns, flowers, trees and the spectacular and strange sights you see. We stressed that walking was an increasingly popular sport especially ideal for winter tourism

The Evening

Most of the bookstores in Aghios Nikolaos will be selling copies plus the tourist information offices. I know Ian who has the bookstore in Elounda wants to order copies. However I am not sure if other Elounda stores know about it yet. They can contact the public library in Aghios Nikolaos for further details.
