Well what can I tell you about living in Elounda, well I should tell you who I am. My name is Stephen I own this site and another called White Horses Elounda. I own and run a jewellery shop in the village and have done since 2005, I moved over here with my girlfriend who is Greek and we decided a jewellery shop would be a good business to run. Well as most things in life all seamed ok the first year then slowly tourists stopped coming to Elounda. My girlfriend realized there was not enough work coming into the shop for both of us so she got a job working in one of the local hotels. I now sit in the shop building websites and serving the odd customer.
Well business aside living in Elounda is something I will never regret even with all the stresses of running a business. You have problems in business no matter where you live but here its different. When I step outside this jewellery shop door I walk out into a small village with the same standards and ideals our little villages used to have in England some time ago, which I think is being lost. Leaving ones door open or leaving the keys in the front door on the outside so neighbours and friends can let themselves in still goes on here. It feels safe and of course the weather is so much better (ha ha). The winter is the best time for the shop owners we all have a big break yes its true we are not making money in the winter but life slows right down. No tourists are around just locals sitting in the Tavernas were the tourist once sat talking and laughing old men now sit watching the days go by.  I don't want offend but we are all quietly pleased to have our village back its like we can now enjoy Elounda. I think I can say for the most of the locals English and Greek that we in a small way turn into tourists.
I personally like to go fishing off the mouth of the Elounda canal and sometimes off my friends boat. Those who like to walk are spoilt for choice. This all of course depends on the weather, one day it could be sunny and warm the next cold wind and even on occasion snow those gloomy days we just look forward to the brighter days.
There is little work in and around Elounda in the winter however winter time is olive picking time so some of us help out with that. But most of the time is spent visiting neighbours and having coffee and talking about how much we are looking forward to the summer coming again. It seams we are never truly happy but then who is in this world today?
