The tradition of Apokries is thought to come from ancient times in Greece when the God of wine Dionysus was celebrated and worshiped. Apokries is the 3 weeks prior to the Easter. Easter is when most Greeks don't eat meat for 40 day's. You can read more about the Greek Easter here
