Circular Walks and Gorges in East Crete
Circular Walks and Gorges in East Crete by Anne Bouras and Caris Gallos. We first published the book in 2003 and now we have a 2nd edition which has all the updates (bulldozers and fences being the main culprits for the changes) plus 2 new walks. It is also now available in Greek. The book will be on sale in Aghios Nikolaos and Elounda in bookstores and the tourist information offices.

"They call it a stroll!"
Tuesday 10 of February 2009
Tuesday 10th February
When we arrived in Elounda, Jane asked me if I had enjoyed my “stroll”. I did, I did, but I thought it was more like a proper walk!
"They call it a stroll!"
Another walk with the ladies, who wander! We met at 10.30 at the Church in Elounda and set off towards the olive mill on the main road out of Elounda.
The Ladies Together Again For A stroll ?
From the mill, we walked a short way on a concrete track, then through the olive groves, turned right onto a goat track up into the mountains. We went higher and higher and the views from the mountains are breathtaking. We passed through Pines, an old traditional Cretan village where we exchanged greetings with a local taverna owner, eventually reaching the top of the mountain.

Further along the track we had a fantastic view to the left of the gorge and Plaka and to the right Elounda. Sitting on a stone wall, we had our sandwiches and a well deserved rest (or at least I thought so, perhaps the 4 ladies were just hungry).  On the way down we passed Pines again, went through little back streets and on down the donkey track to arrive back in Elounda.

The Ladies Continue Their Stroll
Most of the walk was on old, established tracks with walls either side, some were a bit overgrown and walking needed to be done carefully but, all in all the tracks were very passable. The weather was good despite some hail stones and having to walk against the wind, it was mostly warm and sunny.

Anyone Need A Lift ?
For anyone wishing to try out all the different paths and tracks around Elounda and up through the mountains, I would highly recommend to use the book: “Circular Walks and Gorges in East Crete” (by Anne Bouras and Caris Gallos, contact: bousoulasapt@hotmail.com.)  It is an invaluable reference guide and it keeps you on the “right” track. Good walking shoes are a must as well and don’t forget the water and something to eat!
