Well I know its nothing like the walks the ladies do but the causeway is a flat and easy walk for us who wish a gentle stroll with plenty to see. Several beaches can be found on this walk giving opportunity for wonderful resting places and of course to cool those hot aching feet. If you are really lucky you will have a great prize at the end of your gentle walk, a wonderful cool glass of beer more about this later.
Our walk starts from the slip road opposite Mams Taverna, walk down the slip road passed Ergospasio Restaurant and Katafigio and keep walking along the coast, you will shortly join the causeway. As you walk over the long causeway you will notice the remains in the water to the left of the old 15th century salt evaporation pans which were still in use until the early 1970's. As you walk along you will notice a small beach to the left with beach umbrellas and sun beds, the perfect place to shade and rest or to cool your feet in the clear waters.

“Walking Towards Your Prize” (EloundaInfo, 2009)
Olous is the original Elounda a city that was settled in the Minoan times and at one time boasted 30,000 inhabitants. It was an important trading point and the story is that the city was submerged because either a massive landslide or a major earthquake around 780 A.D. Many artifacts have been discovered in the waters that now cover the ancient city, these can be seen at the Louvre Museum in Aghios Nikolaos. On a calm day you can see the ancient broken walls of the city in the waters of Elounda Bay.
The small beach, have a rest or even a dip !
The Elounda Causeway, an easy walk but still with lot's to see
The ancient City Of Olous the walls can still be seen
The old bridge over the canal
The salt pans, the twisting walls can still be seen
As you walk you will see one of three old windmills and a little further the small bridge that crosses the small canal. Your prize is now in site, as you walk over the bridge look to your right and you shall be blessed with the sight of the Canal Bar. This bar is famous for being probably one of the most perfectly situated bars in Elounda with seating close to the canal fantastic views and a atmosphere of total relaxation. The bar at the time of writing this article is closed, however I have had information from a good source that the bar is now under new management and is planned to be reopened in in mid-June and EloundaInfo will be at the opening.
