LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION
Due to its beauty, film-makers have chosen Elounda as a backdrop for several movies and TV series.
The Moon spinners was filmed here in 1962 starring Haley Mills, though the book by Mary Stewart on which the film was based was set in Southern Crete.
In 1972
The Lotus Eaters a British series was also made in Elounda.
In 1976 the BBC filmed its famous TV series of
Who Pays The Ferryman in and around Elounda. Following the success of the series, a book based on the screenplay was written by Michael J Bird. This continues to sell well in local bookshops 30 years later.
The success of this TV series changed Elounda for ever, from being an unspoilt small fishing village, off the beaten track to the tourist resort we see today.
Then 27 years later came
The Island by Victoria Hislop. Few anticipated the great success would have had on some business here on Andrea Papandreou street and elsewhere in Elounda. It has been a privilege to be here the past three years. Now we hear that a film may be made based on the book. I am available MR Spielberg if you want me.
